CARAT

A carat is a unit of weight used for diamonds and other gems. One carat is equal to 1/5 of a grain. Also, a carat is broken down into units called points. There are 100 points in a carat. So, for example, 50 points is equal to 1/2 carat and may be written as .50 ct. Seventy five points is equal to 3/4 carat and may be written as .75 ct.

PRICE CATEGORIES

It is very important to know how carat weight affects price. Common sense might tell you that ten .10 ct. diamonds totaling a carat should be equal in price to four .25 ct. diamonds, or two .50 ct. diamonds when all are of the same quality. However, this is not so in the diamond trade. Because a large diamond of a given quality is rarer than a small diamond of the same quality, the larger the diamond of a given quality, the more it will cost per carat. Diamonds are separated into price per carat categories according to carat weight ranges. Each time you increase the carat weight range, the price per carat will increase for any given quality. Buying guides for diamonds are typically broken down into the following carat weight ranges:

.03 - .09 ct..45 - .49 ct.1.50 - 1.99 ct.
.10 - .17 ct..50 - .69 ct.2.00 - 2.99 ct.
.18 - .22 ct..70 - .89 ct.3.00 - 3.99 ct.
.23 - .29 ct..90 - .99 ct.4.00 - 4.99 ct.
.30 - .39 ct.1.00 - 1.49 ct.5.00 - 5.99 ct.
