In 1919, a diamond cutter and mathematician named Marcel Tolkowsky introduced ideal angles in which to cut the crown and pavilion of a round diamond. He also came up with an ideal table percentage.
Through experimentation and mathematics, Tolkowsky claimed that a pavilion angle of 40 3/4 degrees, a crown angle of 34 1/2 degrees, and a table facet which measures 53% of the diamond's diameter were ideal for achieving maximum beauty.
Since then, there have been only slight differences of opinions as to the proportions which give a round diamond maximum beauty. In fact (except for differences of opinions of an ideal table percentage from 53-58%), Tolkowsky's findings are still accepted today, and a diamond cut to these proportions (seen above) is considered an ideal cut diamond.
