The pavilion is the part of the diamond located below the girdle. The main function of the pavilion is to control the path of light once it enters the diamond so that the maximum amount of this light can return to your eyes.
Brilliance is defined as the internal and external reflections of white light returned to your eyes from a diamond in the face up position. Therefore, the more light that returns to your eyes from within a diamond, the more brilliance it will exhibit. How well the pavilion is cut is a primary factor in determining the degree of brilliance a diamond will exhibit.
